God Works for the Good

We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28 RSV).

Many times in my life I have been paralyzed trying to make a decision between two good and moral options. I can become so paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong decision that I can be afraid to act – and thus get stuck, advancing along neither good option.

But through the grace of God and growth in faith, hope, and love I am realizing more and more that it is okay to make mistakes, it is even okay to choose ‘wrongly’.

How can this be?

Given that what we are choosing is moral and it can’t easily be discerned which of two or three good options is the best one we are simply called to act so that we can move forward – not in a rash way but in a way that places faith, hope, and love in Christ rather than self, circumstances, things, events, people, places, etc..

Christians are a people who have responded yes to the call of God’s purpose. His purpose and His goodness are one: they are a unity. How could we possibly make the wrong decision if the criteria of goodness for us is not Wordly perfectionism but instead love of God?

You see, that is our calling – to love God. We don’t make our lives good through making perfect decisions as if we have some kind of divine foresight.

We are perfected (completed) by Jesus Christ.

Thus our focus shouldn’t be so much on fretting on this or that decision but instead concerning ourselves with the degree to which we are responding to the purpose of our immeasurably good God – in whatever circumstances we find ouselves in – with faith, hope, and love in Him.

Trust Him.
